Base Running by Clemson John Rittman

Philosophy
– Be aggressive
– Be alert
– Think ahead
– Proper form and technique
– Effort and hustle
– “Do the little things that don’t cost anything to do, but just might win you the ball game.”

Objectives
– Constant pressure on the defensive
– Two base mentality
– Smart and instinctive
– Encourage aggressiveness
○ Especially in practice to help
○ No base coaches in scrimmages
– Don’t have to be fast to be a good baserunner
– “We want baserunning to win us games, not lose us games.”
– Running from home to 1st
– Run with head up to see what is going on
Peak for over throw − don’t slow down
– Athletic breakdown − lower center of gravity
– Don’t peel, unless for sure out and 1st is moving to tag runner
65′ through the bag
– Hard 60 always, even with sure outs
– Practice the walk back
– When practice swing realistically

Round 1st base
– Slight arc to hit corner of 1st base
– Either foot hits bag
– Upper body leans towards 2nd base
– Make them think you are going to 2nd with aggressive movements, not distance
– Return − open up to ball

Leads and returns at 1st base
– Be under control
– Quick by not in a hurry
2 way lead
○ When the foot hits the ground leave bag
Lead off fast − return faster
○ Returns
▪ Left foot − back outside corner
▪ Peel away from tag
Return head 1st
○ Head away from plateƒbase

Stealing 1st to 2nd base
– Tracking the ball from release to home to see if bunt pops to be able to freeze
Reminders at 1st base
– On bunts read ball first
– Listen to 1st base coach for help wƒ2nd base pick
– Never get picked off or double off
– Read pitch trajectory

Leads and returns at 2nd base
– 1 step 3 hops (or 4 steps if not squaring to home)
– Angle outside corner of 3rd base
– Short game lead exception
○ Slight angle

Leady and returns at 3rd
– Controlled walking
○ Land on right foot
– Off in foul
– Back in more foul
– Know where 3rd base is positioned

Reminders
Tag on all foul balls
Pre−pitch knowledge
– Read pitch trajectory
○ Passed ballƒwild pitch
– Read ball trajectory off of bat
○ Read ball angle − up or down
– Freeze on line drives
– Break up double plays
– Base runners make their own decisions, except on balls behind them
– When in doubt slide
– Be sure you’ve been called out before you leave the base − don’t be an umpire
– Read the trajectory of throw to bases
○ Can you get to the next base, because of an over throw or bad hop
